Heavy Cannon
Development Background
Heavy Cannon is another arcade game that was developed especially
for San Francisco based internet games company Pogo.com (now acquired
Electronic Arts). Heavy Cannon was built from the ground up to
Pogo.com's specification, and was designed as an addition to their
suite of web based classic arcade games.
Game Instructions
Your mission is to repel the mutant invasion from above. You
command the human's last line of defense, the experimental Heavy
Cannon. You must destroy all hostile aircraft and paratroopers,
while defending your gun from incoming bombs and cruise missiles.
It is imperative that you destroy the mutant paratroopers before
they hit the ground. If four mutants land near your outpost (on
either side), they can mount a lethal ground assault against your
cannon.
The controls for Heavy Cannon are very simple indeed, use your
arrow keys to control the aiming angle of your turret(left and
right movement), and use the [Space Bar] to fire.
Conserve your ammo. HQ will sporadically send a (red) cargo plane
to airdrop ammo and power-ups for your cannon. You must avoid
shooting down the cargo planes; they're trying to give you ammo!
Cargo planes drop the following types of ammo:
| Gravity Shells |
These shells will arc up and then
fall back down to earth in a gentle curve. Their advantage
is that they can be used to destroy troopers who are on the
ground and normally not hittable. |
| Rapid Fire Shells |
These shells fire more rapidly than
the player's normal gun, but otherwise behave similarly. |
| Armor Piercing Shells |
These shells go right through any
target until they go off the edge of the screen, destroying
anything they hit. |
| Guided Shells |
These shells can be controlled after
firing. They follow the motion of the player's turret, moving
left or right as the turret turns. |
| Spray Shells |
These shells cause three shots to
fire in a small arc around the gun's trajectory every time
a shot is normally fired. |
| Heavy Cannon |
This super-power up combines the
effects of the rapid-fire, armor piercing, guided and spray
shells, resulting in major mayhem and total mutant carnage. |
Tips and Hints
Don't allow 4 paratroopers to land on either side of you gun
emplacement, or your game will be over at the end of the current
level.
Shooting the parachutes off of the airborne enemy paratroopers
will send them plummeting to the ground, destroying them on impact.
They will also destroy any enemy troops that they happen to land
on (on the ground), and so this is an effective way of eleminating
enemy troops who have successfully landed on the ground (who pose
a definite threat to your gun emplacement).
Some bombs and missiles may miss your gun emplacement, and explode
harmlessly on the ground. They will also destroy any enemy ground
troops they hit. If you can judge which bombs and missiles are
going to miss your gun, and allow them to impact on the ground
without shooting them, they may clear up some enemy ground troops
for you.
Be sure to allow the friendly (bright red) cargo planes to drop
their ammo onto yor gun emplacement, as this can be vital to your
survival. Check your fire, as friendly cargo planes, and dropped
cargo boxes, can be destroyed by your gun fire.
